First Kiss – Jon’s Perspective

darcy-sweet-final-deathThis scene takes place in A Darcy Sweet Mystery – Book 1 – Death Comes to Town.

Darcy settled the plastic bag full of ice against his wound. “Here,” she said. “This will help with that knot forming on the back of your head.”

He didn’t feel bad about letting her nurse him. It wasn’t every day he got hit in the side of the head with a book. And it was kind of her fault.

Besides. Her fingers were warm against his scalp, and the ice was cold, and the mixture of sensations was making his heart race. She was so close to him right now. They were alone here in her bookstore. Alone together.

Taking a chance, he slipped his hand over hers.

She pulled back, dropping the bag of ice to the floor with a wet thunk.

Then she stood there, her wide hazel eyes staring up at him.

She was so pretty.

“I, uh, didn’t realize that you were quite so tall,” she whispered.

Her voice was soft and alluring, and he could feel the attraction between them pulling him closer. It was a tangible thing, like a force of nature somehow generated by their bodies, their thoughts, their desires.

Or, maybe that was all him. In that moment, he didn’t care. This was a chance he wasn’t going to miss. She could tell him no, and he’d accept that and move on, even if every part of him ached to find out what was going to happen next.

He really hoped she didn’t tell him no.

With a smile, he leaned in closer and lowered his voice to match hers. “I’m glad to have you on my side, Darcy. Only, no more flying books. Okay?”

“Yes, I agree.” She laughed softly, nervously. The tension between them grew. “And, um, I’m glad you’re on my side, too. I couldn’t do this without you.”

They were so close now that Jon imagined he could feel the heat from her skin against his own. She held so very still as he stroked a finger across her cheek. Was she even breathing? His body pressed against hers. Now, in a rush, he lowered his face and gently brushed his lips against hers. He tasted her mouth. Fire surged within him. A first kiss.

Everything he’d imagined.

He felt over her back with his hands, felt the curve of her hips, the way she trembled ever so slightly. It lasted forever. He wanted it to last longer.

When they broke apart she laid her head on his chest. He could hear her breathing, felt her fingers playing with the back of his neck. She was content to just be held in his arms.

Then she gasped.

Leaning back, he held her arms and kept her close, trying to read her thoughts in her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“I know what Millie has been trying to tell us,” she said. “That book. The only person I know who is reading that book right now is Helen.”

Just like that, the moment was broken, and they were back to investigating the murders. Jon didn’t mind.

He would never forget that first kiss.
